Where we make ActiveInbox with you

Major Gmail Update

Just a quick service announcement – only just spotted this, so it’s caught me on the back foot. Will try and get both 2.0.11.1 and 2.1 repaired today.

Update 04/01/2009 – 23:00

It’s taking longer than expected – some fairly deep code changes having to happen. Testing now, so should be ready to release in early Thursday am. Thanks for all the messages of support! (Oh, and plenty being learnt – as we do with every break – about how to handle changes better in the future).

    Thanks.

Cool, you’re always fast acting on changes like these, thank you!

I’ve been using GTDInbox for a couple of weeks and it’s a great complement to ThinkingRock. Is there any way to avoid this in the future (does google post information about GMail/API changes?).

    Thanks for your efforts.

  • Ian

Thanks. Life sucks without GTDInbox. I think you do a great job, by the way.

    Good timing :)

    Thanks in advance!

Will the update work with Firefox 3.06?

  • Dan

Just wanted to let you know that your work is VERY appreciated. Thank you!

This is a fantastic extension. I added several grease monkey scripts and thought I had created the mess only for myself. I should have known it would be a gmail problem. Having used this for better than a year, I had no doubts or suspicions it was a coding problem.

I will be happy to get the updates whenever they are ready as I know the quality that is the norm here at GTDInbox always delivers maximum value and minimum downtime.

Keep up the good work :)

  • Neil

Thanks for all the unplanned hard work, much appreciated, much respect :)

this problem highlights a benefit, for me, in the design of GTDInbox. we’re able to continue working within the GTDInbox framework, just doing manually some of the operations that the GTDInbox UI tweaks otherwise make more convenient.

this means i’m not at all “without” GTDInbox – it’s now two operations, hitting the X on the message’s S/NextAction tag and adding an S/Finished (using gmail’s new, accelerated labelling feature) instead of one Finished click. not so bad. or i have to use the gmail search to find my NextActions set – “label:S/NextAction -label:S/Finished”. etc.

and it is still a tad easier than what i have to do all the time on my android G1 phone, but even without any of GTDInbox conveniences there, i still have and can use the framework, effectively making it usable across platforms.

    well done!

Andy – Thanks in advance for making it happen.

    Hi Andy,

I should’ve said this, yesterday, after the Gmail upgrade roll-out began affecting my apps and personal accounts. You do a great job, and I wish I could be of more practical help. I try to chime in on the forum with simple ways to work around situations such as this. For instance, simply turning on the Labs keyboard shortcuts feature makes applying GTDInbox labels easy with the new upgrade. This is actually an improvement to GTDInbox, and I am sure everyone will see it that way once you are able to restore some of the other functions. Some of your users seem to have trouble surfing on these changes, and I realize it is beyond the scope of your project to hand-hold them through, but you might consider adding some kind of best practices summary in the forum so that people who are baffled by Gmail upgrades can get quick help without having to read through the whole list of comments.

So, I’m sending you a note of encouragement. I really believe that your model of using email as the basis of contact and project management, rather than as an add-on to a traditional electronic Rollo-Dex or a traditional project-oriented system, makes complete sense for business use, today. You have a new paradigm for organizing work, and it definitely does the job for me. These Gmail upgrade difficulties are not only unintended consequences but terrific opportunities to refine your concept and its implementation as Google gives the underlying platform more power. They don’t detract at all from your concept or implementation. Rather, they raise the level of underlying functionality for you to build on.

Best of success with the current Gmail upgrade. If I were with Google, I would be calling you for advice rather than letting you struggle with all-nighters after blind-siding you with unannounced upgrades. But I’m not with Google, so all I can say is that I support you all the way and wish you the best.

Have only been using GTDInbox a couple days now and can’t wait for it to be working again. I really love it!!! It’s reassuring that you’re acting so quickly on this fix and thanks for the communication also. I’m hoping that it’ll be stable enough over the long run to continue using it. Thank you so much for the work you’re doing.

(whoops – i had the syntax wrong for status searches, it’s ‘label:s-next-action’ or ‘s-next-action -label:s-finished’, etc. maybe not as trivial as i said – but still, not very complicated…-)

  • CDR

Everyone being kind to you Andy. Here I am pacing the room – out for a capuccino – come back click on my sidebar red label NEXT ACTION……

argggh – still not working . WHERE ARE YOU. ? GTD is now CGAD – can’t get anything done.

just kidding – i had just figured out the perfect implementation of GTDINBOX in combination with the ticklist thing in Google TASKS

    Great work.

    Great little tool!
    Keep it simple!

  • Jim

Thanks so much for taking care of this. I don’t know what I’d do without GTD. It literally has been a life saver in keeping me organized.

I just started using GTD an few weeks ago.

I write a monthly tech article for our local paper and I promised my reader an in-depth look at GTDInbox in the next article. Next day – Gmail changes wreck it all!

I’m so glad to hear that it’s being worked on :-)

  • Andy

    @Duncan – that’s very cool – thank you!

  • http://tashasunny.blogspot.com Tasha

Looking forward to using this. Keep getting error that labels aren’t right. They look good. Will try hard boot. Already updated.

CDR – would love to hear how you use GTD with tasks and do you use and iPhone with this? New to all of it, but much to get done!

Andy Thanks for this… It looks like something very useful. Must learn more about concept too.

What a facinating article. I’m looking for an NLP expert to help with a project, could you help?
