Critical GTDInbox Updates – 2.0.11.2 and 2.1a2

Phew :) Ok, that was a tough slog – I had to rewrite some key components to account for Gmail’s new UI – but (I hope) we now have a working pair of releases.

The ‘even better’ news is that we’ve learnt plenty about what can go wrong, so as we prepare major updates to 2.1 we are making it more robust against future Gmail changes.

To upgrade to 2.0.11.2, just go to http://www.gtdinbox.com/ and click the green button.

GTDInbox 2.1 testers, I hope you still have your emails with the details on how to download it. Just go to the new website and grab 2.1a2 (again, the green button). If you have donated in the last few days to help us out (and a huge thanks to those who did – it was a great morale booster), you should be getting emails shortly with details on how to access 2.1.

Update (05/2/2009 – 5 mins later)

I wanted to add – a big thanks to everyone who sent supportive emails and posted nice comments on the earlier blog post – the community’s support is, as always, very appreciated.

  • Dr. Aung Maw

Green button at http://www.gtdinbox.com is still pointing to old 2.0.10.2 version and 2.0.11.2.xpi . Not updated 2.0.11.2 version you mentioned. Please kindly help. I am eagerly waiting for your fix.

  • Andy

Dr. Maw – I’ve just checked it for you, and it’s working at this end. It may well be a browser cache problem – you can force Firefox to refresh the page (press F5 or click Refresh); and if that fails, you can try clearing out your cache (Tools -> Clear Private Data).

  • Daniel

    Works great! Thanks! :)

  • http://saltandoalhiperespacio.blogspot.com/ DarthIA

    Thanks Andy!

Now it’s working but it still has some issues: clicking on Action label only shows Actions, nor NextActions. In fact the popup menu doesn’t work unless I click in the icon to open the search in a new window.

  • Dr. Aung Maw

Dear Andy – you are right. It is cache problem. It is working now. Fantastic fix. Thank you very much for your hard work. Very much grateful to you.

    Hi Andy,

thanks for the quick update. I just wonder if there is an option that was available in the previous version. I just need to set up Labels in my left Gmail sidebar to show the number of new messages, not the number of action items. Is there a way of achieving this? I could not find this option in GTDInbox settings page.

    Thanks,
    Jan

  • Chip

I’m having the same issues as DarthIA. Clicking “Action” shows me all actions, no next actions, and all of my finished items.

    Please help.

    Hi Andy,

Fantastically quick update! Thanks! However, I am having the same issue with Actions not including Next Actions. Also, the right click options are appearing when I right click on a label, but they don’t actually work. Same with the drop-down dashboard both when I restrict to a view of a label and when I don’t.

Thanks, again, and I look forward to your fixes.

    Andy,

Thanks for the update – its not quiet there…

When I click on the Dashboard dropdown I get my list of Statuses with a counter. However when I click on one of these, for example, Action, nothing happens – I expected a list of all my actions.

The workaround for now is to click Action under the Labels window on the left hand side of the page.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan.

I posted a fix for the Dashboard dropdown in the forum (http://forum.productivefirefox.com/index.php/topic,851.0.html) – it’s caused by the search button not being “clicked”.

  • http://rdwatkins.com RD Watkins

    Andy,

I have the same issue as above. I tried changing the default setting for “Only One Status Label can be Active” to off on the the GTDInbox configuration tab. This did not clear the Action and Next Action issue. Additionally, the existing starred items were not labeled as “Next Actions”.

I also noticed that the count in the labels does not clear unless the browser refresh button is used as well.

    Thanks,

    RDWatkins

I was just noticing that GTDInbox was not working with the new label buttons, and decided to see if there was a new version out, and there is. Great timing! And keep up the great work!

Ummm… I’m a ninny. I can’t find that email anywhere any more. Andy, any help for a donator?

  • http://www.wibbler.com Wibbler

Oh, it’s ok – I’ve found a hint on my current GTDInbox installation!

  • http://www.phelansensei.com Tim Phelan

I am not seeing the dashboard at all. When I click on the statuses, only Finished opens up. The others do nothing. I really miss the Dashboard! it was the best part.

Is there a way to hide the status label count (the number in [ ])?

  • http://www.impactsigns.com Shabbir Moosabhoy

    Hi,

I upgraded to the latest version today. Still having one issue: Changing staus using the inline links, the ones written out horizontally under the subject line, does not work. From the drop downs it does work fine, but I like to use the inline ones. If I need to so something let me know. Appreciate your product and your work!

    Thanks,
    Shabbir

OK, Gmail’s new labs feature “Multiple Inboxes” makes this system even more beautiful. Hopefully, I will still have “stress-free” by having an empty inbox, and “productivity” by not forgetting where my next actions went!

I set up my other inboxes to be “S/Next Action,” “S/Action,” “S/Waiting On,” and “S/Some Day.” Could also do a current project’s next actions if I get bored. Cool…

  • mattk456

    Hey Andy,

I’m having the exact same issues as Shabbir… to a “t”. It’s good to know it’s not just me.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Dan

Thanks for the update, however I’d like to confirm that I am having issues with the newest version.

The Status labels do not work properly. Also, when I star an email, Next Action is not applied. In general, throughout the addon, the labels aren’t being applied correctly unless I use Gmail to manually set them.

    Thanks for the hard work!

  • István Tétényi

    Andy, you are great!

  • http://www.rubicontechventures.com Dax Davis

I’m having the same issue as Dan. Most of the time, if I use the dropdowns for project, etc. to select a label it shows the label bolded in the drop down, and the Projects dropdown shows a 1 next to it. But GMail, never shows the label where it usually does and if I refresh the page none of those settings are saved. I have to label with the GMail label drop down.

I finding a problem with preview and google multiple inboxes. When I click Preview I do not get the email I have selected but one from Statuses Inbox.

Andy, thanks for all the work you put into an app that makes managing email so much more productive. Without your GTDInbox (and Remember the Milk), I’d be overwhelmed.

I’ve been with Gmail from the early days and rely on it. With the customization your app provides, I’ve been able to use one primary email account to manage personal, business, and community service correspondence.Remember the Milk helps me integrate and synchronize tasks, events, and notes between desktop and web2.0. I’ve put some work into making all 3 GTD compliant as well. I should mention that Firefox/Mozilla introduced me to all 3 via extensions. I said all this to point out that I, like many others, have been slowly introduced to the world of extensibility. I’m not a “technical” person, but have had to learn a few things due to the nature of extensibility, e.g., compatibility issues, app growth issues, and so on. I am being challenged at this time. Gmail is changing. GTDInbox is changing. Remember the Milk is changing. Right now I am having difficulty with all 3 working together. I should say 4 because Firefox updates frequently as well. So, imagine my fear… losing structure and manageability of my business, social, community service, and personal email. I found myself getting anxious and angry.

Then I remember… it’s folks like you, those that do the Remember the Milk, and others who work very hard to share knowledge, skill, and creativity to make the web experience more productive. And we get all this for free!!! Oh, I know there are premium services that are great, but the free version of your app is excellent. I commend you for the commitment you have made to the anonymous us out there that benefit from you hard work. I commend all those who take the time to write on their experience and to offer work-arounds or other tips.

I think I get it now… There is a responsibility that must flow to the rest of us who benefit from your work. It is to give you feedback, to support you (even with money if we can), and to spread the word. Shred growth. Shared responsibility.

Your comments in this blog helped me see that you need and want feedback.

So here is my first stab at feedback:
    1. Your update let me access my status files again. (Thanks for the quick fix).
    2. Previewing an email works correctly only in the Inbox. When viewing email from any other collection (by status, by context, by project, by reference, etc) the preview is of another email – no rhyme or reason to what other email it will show either – at least none that I could find.
    3. Dashboard is now present, but, like others reported, it will populate the search box with my selection, but it will not do the actual search. I see the work around offered in one of the comments, but I don’t know how to get that into code. I know how to open about:config and access the code for GTDInbox, but not how to write in the work around. I tried resetting the code but this did not help.
    4. When using Preview to assign Projects. For projects, the prefix is P/. I have P/Curren/NameOfProject. When I use the Preview pane to assign project namle, it only picks up on the prefix and creates a new label “P/” and assigns it to the email. This does not happen when I assign the project name from within the email and use the GTDInbox drop down box.
    5. FYI. There are times when the Remember the Milk extension does not load, so I’m wondering if there is something about Firefox upgrading that influences your app as well as Gmail updates.

    Thanx

    Thanks for the prompt fix!

One new problem, however – My Misc labels now show a combined count for all new emails plus all conversations with that label that also have a Status of any kind. (Previously, they just showed an unread count, with Statuses not counted).

I use my Misc labels to manage mailing lists – I filter anything from a list, label it and skip the inbox. The unread count then shows me that I have new mail from my list – this is particularly useful with some low traffic but high importance lists I subscribe to.

Now, however, the unread count changes (and the label goes into bold type) whenever there is a Status attached to any email in that list.

I can see this might be useful for some people – it would be fine as default behaviour if there were a checkbox to switch it off somewhere – but without this, I’m afraid GTDinbox remains broken for me :-(

    - and it makes such a big difference when it’s working! Please Fix! :)

When I select a project to add an e-mail to from the dropdown, it does not add the proper label…

Andy: Thanks for all your work on this. GTD for Gmail has really made my work more efficient.

Since the last update, I’ve had another problem that I haven’t read about: the Hipster option seems to be gone. I checked under Settings > GTD Inbox > UI and don’t have the ‘don’t show hipster’ box checked, so I’m not sure where to look next. Perhaps someone else using the software could tell me?

    Thanks.

  • Ando

    Having the issue as Dale.

“I finding a problem with preview and google multiple inboxes. When I click Preview I do not get the email I have selected but one from Statuses Inbox.”

  • Bill B

Still having issue of inline status/contexts/projects not working – will work occasionally one one, but if I click any option other than ‘some day’ it will not apply the label. Yes I am new version, have tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

  • http://www.rubicontechventures.com Dax Davis

    @Luke Rumley

Great idea for using the multiple inboxes.

I’m having issues with the new version. Unread count isn’t cleared until the browser is refreshed and labels within labels (folders within folders) are not displayed properly: label reads “S/Finished”, for example, instead of just “Finished”, after it has been clicked. Very annoying.

  • Bill B

New version still does not work for inline clicking nor being able to send mail to address+action@gmail.com – doesn’t apply the label or the action – the only way to use GTD for me is to select the label from the drop down Labels and manually apply, remove, etc.
