GTDInbox 3.0 Alpha 14 – Now on Mozilla!

We hit a pretty big milestone tonight – we’ve finally sync’d the website (check out http://www.gtdinbox.com) and Mozilla Addons.

This comes with a huge personal sigh of relief, as it painful knowing Mozilla Addons (which is how most people are introduced to GTDInbox) was desperately out of date. Hopefully this puts us on a great track for smoother updates in the future.

This update is pretty boring – in a good way – as it’s just bug fixes. Thanks hugely to Glen Norris, Peyton Stafford, Mickey Clements and Mark Cranmer for their assistance in identifying and closing bugs. The principle change is we’re now a lot more sophisticated about the Offline Mode. It’s not solved, but it does at least now recognise when it’s in Unstable Mode and rather than crashing, automatically disables itself (and reenables when you leave Unstable Mode).

Okay, if you like how we’re progressing, it would be a huge favour to me if you could give us a great (5 star?!) review on Mozilla Addons. As 2.x fell out of date, people got upset and started leaving bad reviews – which has a longterm effect on our reputation. The website is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3209/ :)

The new version can be retrieved right now: http://www.gtdinbox.com/gettingstarted.htm

It’s back to exciting feature development in the next release!
Andy

PS If you’re wondering where A13 went… well… Peyton needed an interim version to help diagnose a bug, giving me a great excuse not to have to release the Mozilla milestone as Number 13. Phew ;)

Why disable GTDInbox when you’re in flakey connection mode? Even in offline mode, labeling still works. I prefer to use flakey connection mode since it’s faster, now I can’t use GTDInbox at all unless I’m in online mode :(

    Hi dr,

That’s interesting; and I must admit I did not anticipate that people would do that.

In my testing, I found that is was particularly unpredictable when using the blue Labelling Box in the Inbox Preview; and Archive+MoveNext/Finish+MoveNext in the Conversation. It seemed there was a lag; so you’d remove a label, and it would actually be removed, but Gmail would show it as still there until you did some big refresh event (like moving to a different screen).

I could try making what is disabled more granular; so that you can keep the blue Labelling Box in Conversation, but without the Archive/Finish buttons (and still no Inbox Preview).

Would that be an acceptable compromise?!

I think that would be great! I just find that when I’m not in Flakey Connection mode, Gmail is really slow. It’s much faster in Flakey Connection mode, and I have (had) no issues with GTDInbox features when using it. I was disappointed to see the blue labeling box gone as soon as I went into Flakey Connection mode :(

This release isn’t loading at all on Flock, and I can’t seem to find a previous version to roll back :-(

  4. HeX says:

Where is the open in Gmail link gone when looking at some actions etc from the dashboard? Do I just miss it or was it removed?

  5. AndyM says:

Alex – I’m testing it with Flock now, will let you know if I have any joy (so far it’s being very strange).

HeX – it’s been replaced with a little popout icon (that’s used universally for this purpose). Let me know if you can’t get used to it after a few days; and I’ll do something about it.

  6. AndyM says:

Oh, and Alex – you can normally get old versions if you know the pattern. So, Alpha 12 will be http://www.gtdinbox.com/gtdinbox_3-0a12.xpi . Alpha 11 would be http://www.gtdinbox.com/gtdinbox_3-0a11.xpi and so on and so forth.

  7. HeX says:

AndyM, sorry but still can’t find it. Where does it popout?

  8. AndyM says:

HeX – Can you take a screenshot of where you’re expecting to see it, just to make sure there’s no bug? andy@gtdinbox.com

  9. AndyM says:

Right, Alex – a HUGE thank you; when I started looking into that Flock problem I found a bug for new users that is pretty much catastrophic. It would have been even worse had it gone undiscovered for another few hours (when America comes to work!). Huge thank you, expect another blog post in 5 mins.

  11. Retaining Gmail label colors in the box (GTD Label browser) would be neat – that would make it even easier to sort out the different threads.
