GTDInbox 3.0 Alpha 15 – Urgent Upgrade

Right, deep apology time. I changed something truly minor in Alpha 14, so small I didn’t even test it (quite simply, a ” instead of a “”); and it completely broke Alpha 14 for fresh installs. The worst part is, for any other Alpha, that would be fine (as the Alphas don’t pick up many new users) – EXCEPT this was the first version that was sent to Mozilla Addons for automatic distribution :D My stomach is only just starting to unknot…

Right, this is tested for new users, old users, Firefox and Flock; and I’m as confident as I can be with the Alphas that it will at least install okay.

Just in case it does not fix itself, try removing the preferences to force a reset. This includes,
1) Close all Gmail tabs
2) Open about:config (and agree to the warning)
3) Search for ‘extensions.gtdinbox’ items
4) Right click each one, and select ‘Reset’
5) Restart Firefox
6) Open Gmail again
7) Restore any Options you had

And finally, the proper update news for this release is back in http://blog.gtdinbox.com/2009/07/29/gtdinbox-3-0-alpha-14-now-on-mozilla/

As usual, install right now by going to http://www.gtdinbox.com/gettingstarted.htm (and click Refresh if it still shows Alpha 14).

PS Thanks to Alex Gold for helping me discover this – it’s prompted 2 crazy hours of bug fixing; but without Alex this would have gone unnoticed a lot longer!

I know you are probably asleep, but thought you should know about the following.
    1. on GTDinbox site, it still lists 3.0a14 but downloads 15
    2. MORE IMPORTANT…search for gtdinbox does not return gtdinbox….search for gtd and it is first choice.

    P.S.
    Loving the new version

Thanks Duane – I was rather ‘wild eyed’ when I was last updating that page, and overlooked it :) But what do you mean about the search? On Google?

  • Alex Gold

Great news! ….except, version 15 doesn’t work for me in Flock either!

I’ve rolled back to 12 and that’s working fine so am happy for now though :-)

    Hi Binny,

Is GTDInbox refusing to load? Did you try the multiple step process above to reset your Preferences? If you’ve got ongoing issues, drop me an email (andy@gtdinbox.com).

v14 installed fine for me, but all versions since 3.0 a9 removes labels when you open a message. I guess this is only a problem on corporate hosted gmail?

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi Kevin,

I just sent you an email (if you didn’t get it, email me) – I’d love to get to the bottom of this as you’re not the first person to mention it.

One thing that happens to me but not all of the time is when I open an email then close it it automatically gets archived. I cannot deactivate the archive button. now i have to go to all mail to see it again.
Also when i click on a label to get all of that label when i click on an email it removes the label.

    Thanks
    Gary S

    Hi Gary,

This sounds like Kevin’s issue – I’ll drop you an email if you want to help me solve it?

Andy – Love GTD Inbox – it has transformed my daily working habits and was disappointed that it stopped working with the upgrade (although, I am glad that you are distributing via Mozilla addon upgrades. So I have a Mac, is that why I can’t see the about:config?

Thanks for your hard work on this, I know that this is a labor of love.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi Sonia,

Thanks for the nice words! about:config should work everywhere… In Firefox, if you type “about:config” into the address bar (no quotes), it should give you a screen that asks you to confirm you understand the risks (don’t worry, if you follow the instructions they’ll be fine).

Then in the about:config page, there is a search bar at the top, that’s where you type ‘extensions.gtdinbox’ to see the preferences to Reset.

Be sure to close Gmail tabs before you start, and restart Firefox when you find Reseting.

If this is an ongoing issue for you, drop me an email and I’ll try and diagnose it directly.

Thanks, Andy. This upgrade seems to have fixed some of the problems I was having with the pop-up. I can now click through and open individual emails. It would still help if I could click on the status category boxes in the left column of the pop-up in order to produce a screen in Gmail showing only those emails.

    Best,

    Peyton

Andy – followed your instructions, but no luck – plus cannot get options link to work. should I just re-install?

  • Pablo

Since 3.0.a13 I have some CPU intensive use from time to time, firefox becomes irresponsive for a couple of seconds, I measured it with procexp.
That only happens when I have a gmail tab, no mather if is active or not.
But, when I close the tab, firefox behaves normally.
    Firefox 3.0.12 – GTDinbox 3.0.a15
How can I tell if a plugin is causing that anomally? is there a process measure over plugins so I can identify it?

  • Tom Ravetz

delighted with the product, had no problems with alpha 14, installed 15 on my new Vista laptop, everything fine after install, but now after shutdown and restart, no sign of GTDInbox – the plugin is there, preferences all set up etc, not disabled. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem. Thanks for all your work.

  • Tom Ravetz

this seems to have sorted itself out, no idea how or why!

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

Tom – “computers” is all I will say :)

Pablo – you can try disabling GTDI temporarily (in Firefox, go to Tools -> Addons, find GTDInbox and click disable; then restart). I’d be surprised if GTDI is causing major problems, even in alpha mode, as it has got a solid foundation. But nonetheless, I would like to know so please email me if you find anything (andy@gtdinbox.com).
I would also seriously suggest an upgrade to Firefox 3.5.1 – it’s far better at performance.

Sonia – there is a bug with the ‘Options’ link in the sidebar. There’s a more stable way to reach them: in Firefox, go to Tools, then Addons, find GTDInbox and click Options.
In fact Sonia, can you drop me an email? (andy@gtdinbox.com) I will try and help you diagnose. You can do a reinstall, but I would guess only a 50% chance of success!

  • Sonia

Andy – once I fixed the Options – its worked. Fantastic – thanks for your responsiveness. Again love your product.

  • Pierre

I’m still trying to get myself fit in the whole new interface, and I have a question about the search function:
In the past I can preset searching strings in the GTD tab in Gmail setting, but now I can’t see it again in “option”.
So I can no longer search particular mails within certain context via one click, which leads to much inconvenience when choosing actions by their own context.
If this function still exist, can anyone show me where it is?
Or this function will no longer be?
    Thanks a lot!

Is there a way I can get a Alpha 12? This was the last running for me…

With 14 and 15 the only thing I have is the Box with the 4 Links.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

Hi Alain, I’ve just dropped you an email – perhaps you’ll be able to help me diagnose the prob?

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi Pierre!

I know what you mean, and it has temporarily gone (GTDInbox 3.0 was a complete rewrite, so we’re re-adding features as fast as possible). It will return. In fact in the Pro version, we’re planning some very cool stuff for navigating around your actioned items – but that’s in the future :)

  • MikeHall

Long time user, first time alpha installer… I’ve been avoiding the alpha due to all the bugs (I should say avoiding re-installing as I gave it a couple tries in earlier versions), but so far I am deeply impressed with the changes.

    1. I’m loving the Archive and Finished buttons. I always hated getting sent back to the index of gmail after each archive request. Suggestion: When an email is archived, you disable the Archive button (this makes sense). But you also disable the Archive and Next button. I suggest leaving that active, so I can his next no matter what the case of the email is. After all, there’s no ill-effect to archiving an archived email. Sure I could go hit the Older button, but thats a context dependent decision whether to use Archive and Next or Older. It would be more GTD to have one way for both.

    2. The dashboard is looking very promising. It performs faster than gmail for me, and its becoming a prefered place to deal with email. To that end, could you make the size of the dashboard configurable. Its so small on my monitor. Maybe even make the edges draggable.

Those are my two favorite features that I’ve found so far. Keep up the good work.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Thanks Mike :)

The resize has been requested before, and it’s on the todo list. In fact I tried to do it a few versions ago, but it proved prohibitively complex due to the way the box is constructed. In the not-too-distant future I will work with Pete to simplify things and add a Resize feature.

As for the Archive+MoveNext’s activeness… that’s actually a very good point. Do you want to add it to UserVoice (http://gtdinbox.uservoice.com), from where it will work its way onto my todo list. It won’t be the next version, but it doesn’t look too difficult, so I’ll be able to get it in soon I hope.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks for the great plugin, it rhas greatly improved my ability to properly manage my inbox.

The issue I was having with the lab feature “Right Side Chat” and your plugin in Alpha’s 11 and 12 does not seem to be an issue with alpha 15, so thanks for helping me track it down and for fixing it.

    Best Regards,

    Clinton
