Quick Fix for Windows Vista GTDInbox installs

Several GTDInbox users have not been able to get GTDInbox 3.0.11 to run even after uninstalling and reinstalling it several times. The following procedure may fix the problem in the short run. Long run, we need to rewrite some of our code so that it plays better with Vista and 7. Hope to do that, next week. Meanwhile, this procedure may get you up and running for your Monday morning work.
Basically, this will make Firefox forget your old GTDInbox settings. GTDInbox should install correctly afterwards. You may still get some error messages, but if the problem has been these old settings, then GTDInbox will work. If you use custom status labels, you will need to update your preferences, again, in the Preferences box, after completing this procedure.
You must follow these steps in order, and you must not make any other changes once you go past the warning.
1. Uninstall GTDInbox.

2. Restart Firefox.

3. Move your cursor to the address bar and type about:config

It will look like this.

4. Press Enter.

5. You will get a big warning screen. Ignore the warning and go ahead.

6. Type gtdi in the filter box. This will show you only information about GTDInbox.

Right click on the line that reads extensions.gtdinbox.account_prefs.

A menu will appear.

Choose Reset and click on it. DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE!

This will make your browser forget whatever preferences it has been remembering for GTDInbox.

Here’s a picture.

7. Close Firefox.

8. Open Firefox.

9. Reinstall GTDInbox. It may work normally. If not, then you will not have done any harm.

    Andy,
Thank you for the commendation. Upgrades from existing GTDInbox installs on 32 bit Vista and Win 7 for the most part work for me so far. However I am stopped dead on a fresh install on a new 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium.
A bright yellow error box on top of browser window shows:
GTDInbox could not load (1 errors). with a link to Report to team or hide. But the Report to team link does nothing.
Addons show GTDInbox as being installed and enabled but opening configuration shows everything empty and unselected.
I hope to nuke this configuration and try 64 bit enterprise. This should give me the option to use a virtual 32 bit xp. I’ll let you know.
Note this is all using FireFox 3.6

  • Alan Hart

That was Thank you for the above recommendation. (Not commendation) Sorry for any confusion.

    Alan,

I have exactly the same at fresh install on Wndows XP SP3 !!!

I think the problem is – GTDInbox 3.011 is NOT WORKING on Firefox 3.6 ! That’s all !

At least if both are fresh installs on existing gmail account with numerous GTD labels which was created before ( my case)

Actually, GTDInbox has worked on Firefox 3.6 for some users. We are tracking down the reason it doesn’t work for everyone and hope to have a new version that corrects this problem, next week.

I will be curious if Alan’s plan gives better results.

    Peyton,

I have FF3.6 at work on XP and at home on Linux.
At home I have no problem with GTDInbox.
At work after the update to FF3.6 GTDInbox just didnt load, with the same behaviour as Alan Hart describes.

Today i copied the settings from the about:config at home to the FF in the office.
The result is that GTDInbox now loads and seems to work properly.
The only (new feature i suppose) thing is that it appears a red box under the GTD menu on the left with error reports.
As they continue appearing – without any problem for my work – actually I dont know if you prefer that I send the report at the end of the day or each time they pop up.
Also I don’t have idea if the errors occur becouse of the copy/paste i did with the strings.

    Sacha,

Thank you for the information. It sounds like copying the setting from about:config might work for other people, at least for those who are comfortable editing Firefox settings. The red box is one of the new features. Please send error reports at your convenience. These are extremely helpful to us as we rewrite GTDInbox. Most of the errors don’t seriously affect use of GTDInbox, but they reveal background problems we want to fix.

I’m having the same problems as alan described above – yellow box informing me that “GTDInbox could not load (1 errors)” and giving the option to “Report to Team” (doesn’t work) or “Hide” (does work). Following the steps described above to potentially solve the error have been tried without success. I tried disabling all the other add-ins but that made no difference either.

Incidentally, I’m running Windows XP Professional 64-bit & Firefox 3.6.

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.

Chris, Peyton Stafford here. Thanks for reporting in. At this point, we should be able to fix this in the next release, due next week.

Can you do me a favor and send us an error report. Here are the steps to create one.

    1. Close Gmail tabs
    2. Open Firefox’s Error Console (in the Tools menu)
    3. In the Error Console, move to the ‘Messages’ tab/button
    4. Click Clear to clear the Messages list
    5. Go back to the Firefox window, and open Gmail (and log in)
    6. Switch back to the Messages list in Error Console. You should start seeing debugging information from GTDInbox.

In normal circumstances, there will be a lot of messages (if there’s none, then it might not even be loading at all – very unusual). Fortunately, there is only one type of thing you need to look for (and if it’s crashing, there will be much less debugging output as it will stop after the error).

An error will be on multiple lines (and one of the only messages that is), and it will have line numbers and stack trace information. This should make it easy to spot in a quick scan.

    An example is:

Error in glNavBar: Could not find mainBucketsContainer nodeStack trace:Exception thrown(“Could not find mainBucketsContainer node”,”glNavBar”)@chrome://gtdinbox/content/js/util/debug.js:110([object Object])@chrome://gtdinbox/content/js/gmail/ui/glNavBar.js:73

If you could just paste this into an email to support@gtdinbox.com, that would be great! If you cannot copy and paste, then a screenshot would be almost as good.

    Best,

    Peyton
