Sneak peek GTDInbox 3.0.22.3 with a Brand New Sidebar and a Big Surprise

As more and more of you buy Plus, we’re ploughing ahead with big upgrades to GTDInbox. Let me first say thank you for your early support, it has – and continues to – make all the difference.

With the thank you I must follow with a brief apology – perhaps more an expectation setting… I’ve fallen a little behind with support emails in the last week, and I’m turning to them now. At the moment I’m doing all the development, so it’s a trade off between pushing on with new features for the majority who have no problems, and solving the remaining glitches for those who need it. For the first 3 months of the year we were 100% focused on bug solving, but I believe we’ve reached a point where we can focus on increased utility. When we take on an additional developer – which is a priority! – it will become far easier to handle support and new feature development simultaneously.

New Feature: New Reviews Sidebar

This is a huge stride forward. Perhaps the biggest leap yet for a manageable email system. The first thing you will notice is Pete’s inspired new crisp & professional design. And then…

Pinning Items to the Sidebar
For each section (Statuses, Projects, Contexts, etc.) you can now pin your favourite labels to the sidebar, for constant ‘at a glance’ overview. For example, I’ve pinned S/Next, S/Waiting On, and P/Issues in support to give me both a sense of what must be done, and a constant nudge to do it.

True Nested Labels
We’ve always had an incomplete implementation of nested labels, where the labels were visually displayed in a hierarchy, but did not behave as one. As of today, when you click a parent label, it shows you that label and all its children. For example, if you have (P/Project, P/Project/SubProject1, P/Project/SubProject2), and you want to see all actions for P/Project, it will show you actions for the Project and all it’s children: “label:s-action (label-p-project OR label-p-project-subproject1 OR label-p-project-subproject2)”.

Drilling into Details with the Search Builder Menus
We’ve turbo-charged the sidebar most significantly with drilling. Now you can click any label, and continue to dig into it until you’ve created exactly the view you want. Perhaps you will start with P/Project, then select C/Call, and then selecct S/Action to see all call actions that must be taken for the Project; whatever you need, it’s intuitive and it’s easy.

The Big Surprise! Deadline/Schedule Emails (GTDInbox Plus)

This has much an oft-requested feature, and I always believed it would make a significant difference to email management, but I’ve been taken aback by just how much of a qualitative difference it makes to a sense of control. I don’t think we’ve perfected it yet, but the core elements are in place. I’d love your feedback on it.

How does it work? Any conversation can now be given a deadline. There are buttons in the conversation’s GTDInbox Action Box, and a new ‘Schedule’ dropdown button above the inbox/search-results/conversation (to the right of ‘Labels’).

It fits into the new Reviews Sidebar, so you can see ‘Today’, ‘Tomorrow’, ‘Upcoming’ and ‘Overdue’ items.

If you’d like to try it, please support us and Buy Plus.

Other Thoughts & Notes

This update is not being pushed to everyone just yet. It’s for volunteers only. We believe it’s stable (in fact more stable than the last release, but we’re keen to get your feedback on the feature improvements from you – our core users).

Two weeks into the Chrome version of GTDInbox, and I’m completely hooked. It pains me to return to Firefox, it’s that good. It’s now taken over as our primary development environment, and we then test it on Firefox prior to release.

We’ve finally settled on a rebrand, that we hope to take live in the next few days. More on that when it’s ready, but I will say in advance that I hugely appreciated all your suggestions at the end of last year; they were vital to forming an opinion.

I’m now returning to support to focus on any remaining glitches, expect some service releases by the end of the week.

Installing 3.0.22.3 3.0.22.6

Firefox: http://www.gtdinbox.com/gtdinbox_3-0-22-6.xpi

Chrome: http://www.gtdinbox.com/gtdinbox_3-0-22-6.crx
(Important note: please uninstall the previous version of GTDInbox before installing this new one).

If Install isn’t smooth, please download the file to your computer, and open it with your browser… normal addon installation will then start.

Update #1

Uploaded 3.0.22.2 to add additional debug information to some of the error reports you’ve been sending (and to fix the bugs we could identify). Hopefully, 3.0.22.2 will give us the error details we need to fix the remaining issues.

Update #2

3.0.22.3 fixes a conflict with Java6 that many of you were suffering from, fixes the Archive button in conversation (as discovered by Jason below), and adds even more debug information.

Update #3

3.0.22.4 is detailed in the latest blog post, http://blog.gtdinbox.com/2010/04/20/gtdnbox-3-0-22-4-please-update/

  • http://www.evaneos.com Farf

    Great news! Thanks!

“Drilling into Details with the Search Builder Menus” is not working for me. Clicking on the arrow doesn’t make nothing… :(

    Farf

  • djr

In Chrome, when clicking to view ‘Today’ (S/Next) statuses, the filter is no longer removing S/Finished items.

    Old search query:
    label:s-today -label:s-finished

    New search query:
    label:s-today

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

Well spotted, that was a definite oversight. Will have a think about this.

  • djr

It looks like the new system is when marking an email as ‘finished’, it now removes all old statuses, where it didn’t before.

  • http://www.westvalleyhomesaz.com Jason

Awesome! Love the drill down and true nested labels. I also like the fact that I can quickly view all project items or items by status. Does a great job of pulling together the complex labeling system I have to track all my clients and current projects. These latest changes will turn GMail along with GTDInbox into a great tool.

A little sluggish in FF, but response time is very good in Chrome.

  • Henrik B

Thanks, but drilling down status menu does not work in Chrome. Also, I miss the old menu (read, I never liked drill-down menus) where you could click “To do” and then “Action” to get a list of your actions. In the new version, “Action” is no longer clickable.

I decided to go back to v3.0.21.4 again, which can be done by:

    1. In Google Chrome, uninstall the GTD Inbox.
    2. Install http://www.gtdinbox.com/gtdinbox_3-0-21-4.crx

  • JasonKB

Can’t wait to try this but when I try to register my Plus account on Chrome it says:

“Could not connect to GTDinbox server. Please try again in a few moments.”

It has been this way for about 20 minutes or so. It doesn’t seem to matter how hard I click the mouse button or yell motivational aphorisms.

Registration server down perhaps(?) I have registered plus on other computers over the past week or so.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi Jason,

It’s on the same server as this blog, so I find that a little peculiar (we’re going to change servers soon, but it’s a nerve wracking job!).

If the problem persists (as in, right now – assuming this posts okay), please drop me an email – andym@gtdinbox.com.

    Andy

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi Henrik,

The core function should be exactly the same… you should be able to click ‘Statuses’ and then ‘Action’ to see all Actions.

In fact, with pinning, it should go one better and let you have ‘Action’ embedded into the sidebar itself.

If, when you click ‘Action’, nothing happens, it sounds like a bug. In that case, please drop me an email (andym@gtdinbox.com).

    Andy

  • John

Same here – Have tried off and on, but I’m guessing it’s because we’re all so excited to use it! THANKS again for getting me back on the GTD wagon!

  • JasonKB

De-installed and re-installed on Chrome and it is working now. I guess I must have fixed the server problem remotely 8^)

Does any one else get a Chrome “Aw Snap” meesage when clicking the GTDInBox “Archive” button?

I get this error on just the Archive button, not Archive and the previous/next arrow.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

I’ve just tried the Archive button, it was fine for me. Technically, that’s a really simple button (behind the scenes secret: it really just clicks on the ‘Archive’ button in Gmail). If it persists – i.e. it happens on every email – let me know and I’ll dig into it. (It might just be a Chrome peculiarity too, which will go away when Chrome updates).

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Important Note for Everyone!

I’ve added this to the install link above, but with the help of Farf’s excellent feedback (and Henrik, I believe this is affecting you too), it turns out you cannot simply install GTDInbox 3.0.22 over GTDInbox 3.0.21.x.

First, you must uninstall the old version of GTDInbox, restart Chrome, then install the new version.

I hope that will clear up the peculiarities some of you are experiencing with the new sidebar

  • djr

Same problem here. I just got Plus, and I can’t register my client :(

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi guys,

I have just tried to re-register my own account and it failed, so I can definitely repeat this.

I’m going to have a quick look at the logs and speak to the server hosts to see if I can track it down.

    Andy

  • AlanH

    Andy,
I’m shaking with anticipation! However both install attempts on chrome (One in Win7, othee on XP) are stopped at:
    The page at https://mail.gogle.com/ says:
Could not connect to the GTDInbox server. Please try again in a few moments.
I will continue trying every 10 minutes or so. However if there is any possibility that it is something on my end or you know of an issue over there and can give me an estimate via email or post as appropriate on how long to chill, I’ll go distract myself with the FireFox update until things are better.
    Sincerely Alan
P.S. Seriously good feature choices in this update as you have described it. Thanks again.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

I’ve got it. Chrome is blocking access to gtdinbox.com (it’s our fault). I will update the GTDInbox configuration files and release 3.0.22.1 asap.

  • Paul Thompson

Ah… How fun. For some reason Chrome now crashes when I try to go to the Google Mail website. I even disabled the extension and it still happens.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

I’ve just uploaded 3.0.22.1 for Chrome, which will solve this. Thanks guys.

  • Paul Thompson

Oh yeah, and in firefox it fails to load with two errors. Submitted…

  • djr

    Yep, works fine now.

Quick question on how the scheduling works – do you get a notification of some sort when an email is coming up on its due date?

  • djr

Also, any way to turn off specific Plus features? I find the ‘Archive’ dropdown distracting

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Thanks Alan :)

If you upgrade to 3.0.22.1 (linked above), it should work now.

  • Udi

    Hi,

    Congratulations for the new release

But I cannot use the link for Firefox.

    Please advise,

    Udi

  • John

Thanks! — Worked like a charm

  • Phil Bowman

Wow, love the new ‘fixable’ labels – works similarly to the ‘add to favourites’ feature I use in Exchange to keep my most active tasks readily accessible. In an absolute dream world I’d be able to drag emails onto the fixed labels, but the general GTDInbox methodology is good enough.

I’ll have a play with the schedules when I get time.

Anyway, keep up the good work! Glad I’m a Plus user.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

Interesting Phil, it had not crossed my mind to enable drag and drop. It can’t be the highest thing on the priority list, but I’ll definitely look into it when I get a chance. It might not be too hard.

  • Mark

I would like to be able to use the schedule feature when sending an email. I find that I often label something waiting for that I would like to “schedule” to ensure I get feedback timely.

  • JasonKB

    @andyM

I get the “Aw Snap” error consistently on multiple machines (XP sp3, Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 8). The only Chrome extensions I have loaded are Evernote Clipper V3.0.7.9616 and ToodleChrome V0.4

    The message is not Archived.

What I just noticed is when that happens my Gcal page shows the Aw Snap error too.

When I reload the Gmail page and use the Google toolbar Archive button, there is no error and the message is archived.

This has been happening from day one with me (when I loaded the first Chrome extension released) and on every release.

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

Thanks Jason. I’ve managed to reproduce the problem now (with your feedback), and I will get it fixed in the early morning, as it’s gone 1am here! Expect it in the next release (3.0.22.3).

  • Aníbal

Well, you managed to convince me to try Chrome and I like it a lot.

It’s fast and crispy. I found most of the extensions I’ve been using with Firefox, BUT I couldn’t find one of the most important: Integrated Gmail.

I think that combining Integrated Gmail with GTDInBox is awesome, and for now, I can’t do it in Chrome.
Anyway, YOU CHANGED MY LIFE. Stress is gone.

    Thank you very much!!!

  • Peter

No left side arrrow to pull up gtd box on my xp netbook with either chrome or FF and no little arrow on my W7 machine with FF?

I want it BAD. Looks great!

Patiently waiting for the fix that always comes!

  • Henrik B

Yes, I can confirm that first uninstalling and then installing (no need to restart Chrome), makes it work in Chrome.

  • Henrik B

As already mentioned, first uninstalling and then installing (no need to restart Chrome, but the Gmail tab), makes it work in Chrome.

Now I see, it is looks really nice!

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

    Hi Peter,

Would you be able to send me a screenshot to andym@gtdinbox.com of what you are (not) seeing?

    Thanks,
    Andy

  • http://www.gtdinbox.com AndyM

Thank you Anibal, that’s such wonderful feedback!

Michael (from Integrated Gmail) and I chat regularly, so I’ll mention your request about a Chrome version. I do know it’s quite hard work (it took us many months to port it over), but Michael’s a very smart guy and I suspect he’s already thinking about it.

  • Bernard Vander Beken

The 3.0.22.2 works great & the scheduling feature takes gmail + gtdinbox almost to the level of Outlook 2007 + Getting Things Done Outlook Add-in.

In fact, using this combination makes it much easier to switch between Outlook for work & gmail as a personal email system.

Nice to have: customizable date format for email scheduling (I am using gmail in English, would like to enter date in dd/mm format and/or with a Start-On-Monday date picker)

  • Peter

Iron Man Andy. Up all night to get this right! Kudos!

  • Jen

Love the idea of the deadline/schedule feature. However, I’ve flagged a few test emails with deadlines and they don’t show up in the sidebar under “Scheduled.” There’s a count there, but I can’t drill down into the messages, and there aren’t any categories indicating today, tomorrow, etc. When I navigate to scheduled, it just opens another box saying scheduled. The other categories (statuses, projects, etc) seem to be working okay.

Also, when I do a compose self, the deadline option doesn’t seem to load…

  • djr

When marking a scheduled task as ‘Finished’, it’s not removing the schedule related labels, so the task remains in your scheduled list.

  • Gianluca

when I open a received e-mail, i can’t see the “status buttons” on top of the page….

I need always to press “F5″ for refreshing the page (with the e-mail open), so i can see the buttons…..

  • Aníbal

    That would be awesome news!!!

  • John

I am consistently getting an Aw Snap error when, in Chrome selecting the Reply to Self hyperlink at the bottom of an email. If I click in the text box, that triggers a ‘Reply’, I can then click on Reply to Self without any trouble.

That’s my workaround for now….LOVE the new interface! Glad to be a Plus User!

  • John

I see this too. For now, I’m clicking None in the schedule, then Finished.

  • http://MichaelMassing@blogspot.com Michael Massing

    Hi, Andy et al,

Thanks for the port to Chrome! I hadn’t commented before because the transition along the 3.0.21.x path had gone so smoothly I was fearful of angering the gods! ;^)

OK, so now that I’m in 3.0.22.x, you can imagine, or have heard from others, what some of the problems may have been. Thanks for making the reversion link handy!

With a fresh install of Chrome and an update to 3.0.22.3, I’m seeing more stability, but I’m wondering if you’ve stepped back the (very promising) new deadline feature. There seems to be some loss of automation in assigning dates to emails, and a failure of GTDInbox’s sidebar to find, even after a refresh, “D/D/x” items I’ve added “by hand” (as seems to be my only option).

Sorry, I tried to post this in the support area and had login problems. Not sure how available I’ll be in the next week, I’m packing for a move. Will try to check in at the end of the week if I have anything to report.

Thanks again and all the best,
    M.

    Chrome 5.0.342.9
    Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Build 9L31a)

  • Gregory

    Sidebar suddenly disappeared :(
    Reinstall didn’t help.
    GTDInbox version 3.0.22.3, Chrome, Windows 7, 64-bit.

  • http://MichaelMassing@blogspot.com Michael Massing

oh, a couple of small things: could you have as paet of your release checklist showing the current version in the sidebar? and has Gmail’s “edit labels” link in the sidebar gone astray?

  • Oliver Schaefer

Yeah, works great on both Firefox and Chrome!
(Firefox Portable 3.6.3, Chrome Portable 4.1.249)

  • Ron

One change that was not helpful: formerly, when I would click on a project during weekly review, I would see the list of all project items w/ outstanding actions (urgent, next, action, wait, etc). This was useful for weekly reviews since i might change the levels of action very quickly. Now, it seems i can only see one action level at a time for a weekly review OR I’m faced with seeing ALL the project items (most of which are finished). This has made it harder and more cumbersome to see the “big picture” within a project and to make action-adjustments in context…

  • Sharon

I really don’t understand why I can’t use GTDInbox anymore. I’ve been getting LOTS of errors all along – fewer in Chrome, many in Firefox – and sending them in with notes. Now it won’t open at all in either browser. Tried uninstalling in Chrome and installing this update both automatically and manually, no go.

Very frustrating and just don’t know what to do next. Don’t really have time to search the forum. Understand it’s beta, but has been very draining with constant errors and problems that don’t ever seem to get solved. For a while it crashed my whole gmail and could only run in html which REALLY sucked. Boo hoo, whine whine, still think it could be great but losing hope to frustration.

  • ste

    Hi,
the sidebar is gone for me too (it worked up to last Friday). I just upgraded from (FF) 3.0.22.1 to 3.0.22.3 but this didn’t solve the issue.
    Regards,

  • Susan Penter

I installed it successfully in Firefox but after a quick check discovered I was unable to open messages only their preview boxes.

I then installed the Chrome version, within Chrome there is no sidebar showing at all.

  • Rob Harrington

    Hey Andy -

How about a update on the status of what’s going on – let us know how we can help. Your users want to hear from you even if it’s bad news.

  • ChuckM

Not working at all in either Firefox or Chrome. Please let us know the status. Even the forum is currently unavailable (blank page when attempting to access).

    Hi Andy,

Everything seems fine to me – for what i am using.
I have a problem with the nested menu in the sidebar:
i.e.: under projects/projectA/ labelC, labelD and labelE are one over the other

Looks like it happens randomly in different labels

    Thanks for the good work

PS: And any chances to see again the wonderful hipster print? ;)

    Thanks
    Ciao

The deadline feature is an interesting development – but I have been using the ‘add to tasks’ feature in gmail quite effectively and like the way that it comes up on the calendar, but it is frustrating how you have to go into the task to set the deadline. What I would really like is a combination of the two.

Have also started using etacts – again an interested development which is in parallel to some of what you are doing.

As a user its good to have al these developments but difficult to see which to go with.
