Bugs Bloodied & Beaten in Preview Release 4.0.4.6

It seems that 4.0.4.5 wasn’t the utopian release I hoped it was. Thanks to Trent, Jason, Mark, Cliff, Ian, Brad, Michael and everyone else who patiently emailed in details, I think we’ve got a lot more stability (touch wood!).

* Including Overdue in Today is now a preference
* Some people were not seeing the HAB work correctly in conversations, which should now be fixed
* The ‘kilometre wide Gmail conversations’ bug has been fixed
* You can now pin sub-folder labels to the Review Bar (and search Active Results properly)
* People with dark themes can now see Notes and warning messages more easily
* ‘old’ no longer appears in Group By and Sort By

What’s that Skippy? You want to easily export emails to GCal?

This has been a much-request feature on Get Satisfaction for aaages, and we’ve now got it!

You’ll see a new icon on the Horizontal Action Bar for exporting an email to GCal. It’ll create a new event, and then back in Gmail, try to detect a link to that event and add it to your Notes. So, the email links to the GCal event, and the GCal event links back to the email.

Mark (who lead development on it) & I would love to hear about the usability of it in the comments please :)

Installing 4.0.4.6

Just pop over to http://activeinboxhq.com/install_preview.php and install as normal!

  • Just ME

Yihah! Andy, and in that case Mark: Thanky you so very much! The “dark theme fix” may only be a minor thing, but I’m glad I can keep my layout as is. But more importantly: The possibility to export mails to the calendar is great – I love it & it works like a charme (though I just briefly tested it).

    Again: Thank you!!!

  • Just Me

One litte thing regarding the export to calendar: It would be perfect, if the link in the note would be linked – so you can just click it, instead of having to copy the link (that is: Go in note edit mode, scroll down, grap the link & paste into another browser tab …).

  • Duane Aliah

I second Just Me’s request to make the link active, or else please remove link: just to make the select / Goto a little easier. Also worked well for me btw.

ugh. you changed the order of the buttons yet again. Now when I instinctively move to the pull-down to archive/finish there is some export to google calendar button. Please move it out of the way or give me a way to turn it off. UGH.

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

    Agreed!

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

    Hi Blake,

I haven’t changed the order… but yes, I snuck the Export button in there :)

Some people have been asking for it to align either to the right of the Deadline box or to the right of the Notes icon. Would you prefer this?

Or perhaps you’d prefer the Export button to disappear entirely (as a preference)?

  • Charles Heckscher

That GCal thing is just fabulous — I’ve wondered for a long time why Google didn’t do that. You’ve beaten them to the punch.

  • Just Me

I couldn’t help it: I just had to renew my Subscription for another year …. until 2014 … maybe I buy another year tomorrow … lol …

No, seriously: I’m totally convinced by AIB – please keep up the brilliant work!

andy (and mark)! great job once again! thanks for the export to gcal feature. very thoughtful (i find that it is redundant with the due date feature but i can see that it would help with my android calendar sync.) i am curious to see how my workflow will change with this. but thanks!

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

    Thanks Eric :)

The thinking went… many things you can manage inside Gmail without having to duplicate them into another service, e.g. email deadlines.

But a handful of things, especially events with a location and time, are better being “escalated” to a service dedicated to managing them, like GCal.

So it’s kind of an 80/20 rule: 80% of things can be managed inside Gmail with regular deadlines; and 20% get escalated to a more specialised tool like GCal.

Does that fit with your experience?

Can I request that the “overdue” emails get taken out of the “today” section – or at least give us the option if we don’t want them in there. All my overdue emails are low priority and i hate having them muddy the waters on what I actually need to be doing today

  • Robert Holmes

    Hey@google-c3313763f7f0b81488680a5bc9d046d1:disqus
I just upgrade to this version, but AIB now does not see my PLUS account, and works as AIB free account… How come?

  • Allan’s Public e-mail

Awesome work AIB folks.  You’ve now destroyed Outlook for me.

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

Hey Ben – it’s a preference that you can now alter (in the main ActiveInbox Preferences!).

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

Ha ha, I’m confused – destroyed in the good way or something’s gone weird?!

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

    Hi Robert,

You may need to re-register on your computer… can you see “Register…” in the top right? If so, click it and enter your ActiveInbox password to get Plus up and running again :)

  • Tasha Stanton

Can’t find the export to GCal button, reinstalled, reloaded, signed in, really excited to try it. What am I missing? Is HAB at the top the next level. What does the button look like?

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

    Hi Tasha,

On the HAB… it’s a slightly curved arrow on a button, to the right of the Notes (pencil) icon and left of the ‘Archive Move Nexters’.

I’ll do a video introduction when I release it to everyone!

  • Tasha Stanton

Thanks Andy, I don’t have that button. There is nothing to the right of my notes icon. Here’s my screenshot. I know I’ve added my own clutter, but I’m working on that. Love AIB! Although I’ve considered moving to Mac mail, AIB is really what keeps me in gMail!

  • Tasha Stanton

realized my screen shot doesn’t show the archive move nexters, but it is blank area between those and the shot I showed you.

  • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

Thanks Tasha – I really hope this isn’t a stupid question, but are you definitely running 4.0.4.6? If you click the Support tab in the top right, do you see which version it is?

(And if it is 4.0.4.6, is it reporting any warnings in the Support tab? If so, please submit them!).

  • Tasha Stanton

Thanks so Much! feeling sheepish. It wasn’t the right version. I installed it yet again and I see it now. Don’t know why it didn’t install the first time, but maybe I installed and older version over it. Will check out your cool improvements!

  • Tasha Stanton

Love, Love, Love the Export to GCal!!!!!!!! It works, so glad you did this!
I will use it every time I get an order. Love that feature so much!!!!

  • Jason

    Hey Andy,

Very nice work…like a piece of art, really. Well done. AIB is really helping me get through my emails now…the most important part of the deal.

I saw someplace where it was mentioned to shorten the names of “Reference, Projects, etc.,” to something shorter, like “Ref,” or whatever. This will save some screen space. I would second the wish to be able to edit the main folders to something shorter. Maybe that can be done now? Tips how to do this?

Also, for some reason, when I upgrade, AIB creates a extra “Projects” folder…which I delete. It’s a duplicate…and happens each time I upgrade a machine.

Thank you for all your efforts and attention to everyone’s ideas!

    Jason

I’ve been harping for GCal intergration for years including on the gmail app for smartphones..  Finally can’t wait to try it out.  If I’m impressed my realor colleagues across US are going to hear about it :)

THANK YOU (big thank you) for the GCal export. I’ve been missing that function as long as I’ve been a GMail user. The money for the subscription has payed off for my so many times.

  • Алексей Веретенов

    Cool!

Do you planing to make sending email by shedule, like http://www.boomeranggmail.com
I think it would be very usful to compare the same function.

  • Kevin Murray

One strange problem I’ve noticed is that selecting the Next tab doesn’t show up all the Next messages. The search string is “label:s-next -label:s-finished”. I’m not sure what “s-finished” is but there are some messages that I just have to remove and add back a label to make them appear for the first time in this search string. For me, it would be better just “label:s-next”.

Hi, Gcal integratin is great, but just the default calendar can be selected when the event is created, while I need to choose another one…
Moreover, sometimes the screen appears as truncated (2 inch more or less) at the bottom; reloading Gmail does NOT solve; reloading the Gmail page via browser temporarily fixes the problem, pls see attached (just a sample from the center of the screen but you can get the idea of what happens at the bottom).
    Thanks!

  • Richard Gaspar

Ok so I just tried to update labels and get the screen that says “Waiting for all deadlined conversations to load so we can begin…”   Its been some time now….how long does that take?   https://img.skitch.com/20120215-maut2a9xpdp1phkesbm5ap4j68.jpg

Love the GCal idea, but the link in GCal doesn’t open the email for me. Maybe i’m doing something wrong?
