Where we make ActiveInbox with you

ActiveInbox 4.0.4.9 Released

This is really a bug fixing update… lots of little things that you’ve mentioned over the last week.

But the bigger change is that I’ve moved the Move-Nexters to the left-hand side of the HAB!

This might have a momentary shock, but I’ve been using it for a week and I think it’s a big improvement.

The reasons are simply:
1) The Move-Nexters have to be in a fixed place, so as you move from email to email they don’t jump around. (I.e. it wouldn’t work to put them to the immediate right of the Notes button, as changing project names can push that further right).
2) When they were fixed to the right hand side of Gmail, anyone with a high resolution had to move the mouse very far to reach them. It became very inefficient.

So I took a gamble and tried them to the left of the status buttons, and it just feels like it works.

(There IS a preference to move them back if you hate them… but please stick with them for a while… it’s ‘Put Move-Nexters (e.g. Archive & Move Next) To The Right of the Horizontal Action Bar’).

It will auto-update in the next few days, but you can try it right now from http://www.activeinboxhq.com/install.php

Just a heads up…

I’m out of the country for the next week. Lisa will be right here on support (and able to reach me if anything really bad happens); and Mark is on stand by to handle any Gmail changes that break ActiveInbox… but we will be going a little slower than normal. I’ll be back on March the 3rd to resume at full speed!

    Putting the move-nexters on the left is out-of-balance for me on my dual-screen setup. My brain doesn’t like it! Please keep the setting that let’s it put back on the right for people like me.
    AIB rocks, as always.

    • Andrew Gross

      I think there’s a preference that can move it back.

  • David Robertson

    Very nice.  Two things:

    1: The “time” bug is still there.  You need to add -s-finished to the filter.  Currently it’s showing finished items when you look at the time labels
    2: The older versions used to have the “move nexter” button default to ‘finish’ when you were looking at an item with an action associated with it.  Can we get that as an option to bring back?

    The help hover text, or whatever you are calling it, seems to be chopped off for me – this is with my Chrome (64-bit Win7) on a new laptop that’s set to 1600 pixels wide – Chrome is maximized and I’m grabbing everything from the extreme left up to about 1/3 of the width of the screen in the image I’m attaching below.

      Thanks Levi!

  • Jochen Schuetze

    Chrome just told me that AIB now needs access to .activeinboxhq.com, .google.com, + 2 more web sites, and it required expressed permission from me. What are these other 2 web sites?

    • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

      Hi Jochen,

      I was worried this might be a problem – I only realised after I released it, and I may do a spot release later to clear it up (so Chrome tells you the whole list).

      The answer is:
      * http://*.google.com
      * https://*.google.com
      * http://activeinboxhq.com
      * https://activeinboxhq.com
      * http://*.inboxfoundry.site/

      It’s the addition of https://www.activeinboxhq.com that made the difference – i.e. we seriously upgraded security and in doing so made people more nervous ;)

      I’ll get it sorted.

      • Jochen Schuetze

        Thank you, Andy — this lets me go fully relieved into the weekend. :-)

    Thanks for placing Move-Nexter  on the left, much better!

  • Guest

    Not sure if the update is causing this or not, but I am getting multiple Gmail server errors – messages not able to be sent, saved, etc….

    • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

      I’d be really surprised if it was – nothing has changed that would affect it.

      Perhaps temporarily disable ActiveInbox, refresh Gmail and see if it’s still a problem?

      • Guest

        I didn’t think to try that.  You were right – same problems even after disabling. Not sure what is going on.

  • Alex

    Just some little feature suggestions:

    - Do you think you could implement a keyboard shortcut for “Send & Archive”? Right now when I press tab after typing an email it goes to the “Send” button so I’ve to use my mouse to use the “Send & Archive” feature. I’m too lazy to use my mouse :P

    - Have you thought about a “Send & Return” button that directs the user back to the Inbox after sending an email? I do this all the times and now it takes me two clicks to do that. Also a keyboard shortcut for that would be nice.

    Hope it helps!

    • http://www.activeinboxhq.com Andy Mitchell

      Hi Alex,

      Let’s dig into those thoughts!

      1) Yes, keyboard shortcuts are a definite… in fact Mark started making a real cool interaction interface for the keyboard; but we’re holding back until everything is settled and stable before duplicating feature-interaction with the keyboard.

      2) You can already… if you just click ‘Send & Archive’ (not one of the arrows), it will send, archive and return to the inbox. (Let me know if it doesn’t).

      • Jochen Schuetze

        Hello Andy,
        yes, “Send & Archive” does what is advertises (which is the same as GMail’s own button with similar label and functionality—just that the latter doesn’t appear when the conversation isn’t in the Inbox anyway).

        However, Alex and I would love to also have a button “Send & Return”, which sends the message & takes me back to the Inbox, but does NOT archive the current conversation.

        Maybe this is too much against the spirit of GTD, but I, too, do this frequently.
        Best regards,
        Jochen

          Not exactly what you want, but keyboard shortcut “g” then “i” will take you to the inbox from any other folder

  • Brad Couper

    I like it on the left! Nice one.

  • David Weisberger

    Very happy with the move-nexters on the left. It puts them closer to the similar gmail buttons and farther away from the “expand all” button which looks too much like archive. (That’s Google’s design choice, of course, not AIB’s.)

  • Rubina

    My labels won’t update and can you get rid of the update labels and tour buttons once you’ve gone through both?

    • http://twitter.com/thompsonpaul Paul Thompson

       @53e2a7490b699272211981d30a94c065:disqus If you open the Take  a Tour, the bottom of the first page offers you a checkbox to request that the Tour icon no longer be shown.

      Didn’t have to update my labels as I’m not using Deadlines so don’t know if there’s an equivalent there, but I suspect it may be that the system won’t remove the Update Labels reminder until that operation has been successfully completed? Kind of a catch-22.

      • Rubina

        Thanks Paul.  You were right!

  • Elena Kuznetsova

    Paid for the Pro version – nice job guys! GTD forever!

    i reckon the add note bar could be improved
    move it over to the side more just an example

  • http://www.facebook.com/ProjectBlake Blake Eitniear

    (I.e. it wouldn’t work to put them to the immediate right of the Notes button, as changing project names can push that further right).=–
    actually, this is where they first were and was truly the best place for them. Since you already have a checkbox now to let people move them to the left or right why not give me back the originally functionality of having them next to the notes field.

  • Jochen Schuetze

    Hello,
    have you noticed this?
    I’d love to “Show Notes on Action Bar Only If Notes Written”.

    However, with that set, When I open a conversation without notes, it first shows the empty Notes field, and then–after something between a fraction of a second and sometimes even a few seconds–the Notes field is hidden, which makes the whole text jump up by half an inch or so.

    This is so annoying that I’ve decided to “Show Notes on Action Bar At All Times”, although I’d still strongly prefer “… Only If Notes Written”.

    Is there anything that could be done about this?
    Thank you so much in advance,
    Jochen

    I seem to remember that setting the “finish” status used to also archive the message (and, I think, way back in the v3 (or earlier?) days there was an option to toggle that functionality, too). It seems not to archive the message when I use the move-nexters (*cringe* – surely there’s a better term!) to finish-and-next or finish-and-return.
    Is there something I am missing? I had a scout in the options, and see nothing obvious.

    [EDIT] Just had a play. Using the [Finished] button, or using the [] move-nexter (i.e. finish-and-return) both archive the message. But the Finish-and-next move-nexter leaves the message in the inbox.

    When right clicking (Firefox WinXP Pro) !Wait_For many entries do not show the Notes 1st line.  I also noticed that Wait ON will not show any notes on right click. LOVE YOUR PRODUCT HAS HELPED ME ALOT
